How much does it cost to rent a convertible in Dubai?

A convertible in Dubai starts at AED 349 a day for a Ford Mustang, and AED 439 a day puts you in an Audi A5 or a Mercedes E200 with four seats. A Mini Cooper S or a Chevrolet Camaro is AED 529, a BMW 430i AED 619, a BMW 840i AED 1,069 and a Shelby Mustang AED 1,159. Above that the roof comes off something faster: a Porsche 911 from AED 1,699, an Audi R8 from AED 1,789, a Porsche 911 Turbo S at AED 2,329, a Rolls-Royce Dawn at AED 2,779 and a McLaren 750S Spider at AED 3,319.

When should you put the roof down in Dubai?

Between November and March the daytime highs sit in the mid-twenties to low thirties, which is convertible weather from breakfast to sunset. From June to September the afternoons pass 40 degrees, so the roof goes down after dark instead, when the coast road is cooler and quieter. April, May and October are split days: roof down early and late, roof up with the air conditioning on in the middle. Dubai gets almost no rain, so a soft top is rarely the problem here that it is elsewhere.

Which convertible fits your trip?

For four people with luggage, the Audi A5, the Mercedes E200 and the BMW 430i are the sensible choices at the bottom of the price list, and the BMW 840i is the quiet one. For two people who want the photographs, the Rolls-Royce Dawn and the Porsche 911 are the cars guests ask for by name. The Mini Cooper S is the easiest to park in Dubai Marina and JBR, and the McLaren 750S Spider is the one that turns a drive into an event. Good to know before you drive

• Ask at handover whether your roof opens while the car is rolling. Some do, at walking pace; others need you stopped.
• A folding roof takes room from the boot when it is stowed, so soft bags travel better than hard cases.
• Park in the shade with the roof up. A closed car under the July sun is a different car twenty minutes later.
• Keep sunscreen and sunglasses in the door pocket. The sun here is harder than the temperature suggests.
• No security deposit, comprehensive insurance and VAT included, and an allowance that averages 250 km a day.
